This commitment, however, generates unavoidable consequences for the physical, felt in different ways. Among the main health complaints of drivers, back pain is at the top of the list, in symptoms such as discomfort in the spine and joints or tension at the base of the neck, mainly.

As these are episodes considered common and routine, there are those who choose to neglect the pain felt in the lower back, either ignoring the need for treatment or taking medication on their own.

However, it is necessary to understand that the problem must be carefully managed, as it is directly related to the habits of the person and can even bring complications if not properly taken care of.

Here’s what you need to know about back pain while driving.

It’s no coincidence that low back pain is so common among drivers, of course. Prolonged stay in the sitting position, due to long journeys, and inadequate driving posture are the main causes attributed to the problem – as the repetition of both is part of daily life, the result is a rapid aggravation of problems.

But in addition to them, there are other factors possibly associated, such as sedentary lifestyle and even weight overload when handling transported loads.

Due to all the risks in everyday occupational life, it is possible to say that the prevention against unwanted back pain is mainly in the care to be taken by the driver!

  1. Keep track of the hours behind the wheel

Although the objective is to comply with deliveries and deadlines, a Good Driver does not forget that the law must first be met! But what does this have to do with back pain?

The relationship is quite simple. The driving and rest time indicated must be used both to avoid fatigue at the wheel – which reduces alertness, increasing the risk of accidents – and to avoid excessively remaining in the required position at the wheel, which, as we have already seen, can cause pain in the body.

  1. Stretch

Both before starting a trip and in moments of rest or short breaks during the trip, it is interesting to do some kind of stretching. Even the simplest ones are valuable as they help to reduce muscle tension and relax the muscles to prevent pain from arising.

Inside the cabin, the driver can rotate the neck in wide movements, to stretch the neck (about 10 times for each side are enough), rotate the shoulders, stretch the arms…

When you leave the vehicle, try to stretch your upper and lower limbs – did you know that a lack of stretching in the back of your thighs, for example, is often associated with back pain? To stretch this area, do push-ups (a position where you try to touch the floor with your legs straight for about 30 seconds).

Brief walks also help to activate circulation and can prevent pain and injury.

  1. Adopt the correct posture

Those who do not want to suffer from back pain need to be constantly concerned about the posture they are adopting when driving. Addictions to incorrect posture inevitably result in discomfort in the region and, if proper care is not taken, there is a risk of the pain becoming chronic or causing other problems.

The correct posture for being under the steering wheel is one that allows the hands to hold you without the shoulder and spine being far from the back of the car sit – it is essential that the spine is supported and erect at all times, at an angle close to 90 degrees . As some vehicles do not have the ideal ergonomics indicated, if necessary use accessories that allow you to not be bent over while driving.
